The predecessor of Union Berlin was divided into two clubs after players were not allowed to travel to the German Football Championship in West Germany despite being runner-up in the Oberliga Berlin. In 1966, FC Union Berlin was founded and in 1960 it was the second oldest club in Germany and the oldest in Europe after Bayern Munich.
