The trucks that most people think of when hearing that term are in fact light trucks, vehicle sizes that are meant to be used for both personal and small-business purposes. More than half the global production of trucks is composed of light-duty pickup trucks, utility vehicles, and vans. Light trucks comprised over 90% of all truck sales, and about half of all U.S. car sales each year at the beginning of the 20th century.
In large part, growth occurred due to the introduction of utilitarian and sport utility vehicles, classified as light trucks but operating as family vehicles. Pickup trucks, called Utes in Australia and New Zealand, are common in North America and in certain regions of Latin America, Asia, and Africa, but not in Europe, where these sizes of commercial vehicles are more commonly made as vans. In the United States, Canada, and the Philippines, truck is generally reserved for commercial vehicles larger than regular cars, including pick-up trucks and other vehicles with open cargo beds.
New York City has a unique definition for commercial vehicles and trucks, which is different than New York States Department of Motor Vehicles categorization. New York Citys diverse mix of land uses, dense urban environments, and extensive transportation infrastructure requires a distinct set of rules and regulations for governing trucking and commercial vehicle operations. Trucks and commercial vehicles are critical to New York City, providing goods and services to millions of New Yorkers each day.
With almost 1,000 miles of dedicated streets, New York has one of the nations most sophisticated truck routing systems. Please reference New York City Transit Laws for the most up-to-date transit rules that regulate truck routes, along with permitted weights and dimensions for trucks.

Commercial trucks in the United States pay higher road-use taxes at the state level than other street-legal vehicles, and are subject to more regulations.
