Minecraft employees built miniature buildings out of Lego bricks during meetings and they even ventured out on an adventure to secretly test new ways to play Minecraft. It has been over a decade since millions of people used the game to create their own creations from virtual building blocks and materials.
In the same building where Microsoft is developing the next Halo game, a team of engineers and game designers is designing the future of Minecraft for mobile phones. Minecraft Earth is a new free game for Android that is surprisingly ambitious for Microsoft. Microsoft has confirmed that Mojang and Minecraft will join its ranks as a member of the new development team for mobile games. We will continue to make Minecraft available on mobile devices such as the Xbox One, Windows Phone and Windows 10 Mobile, "the company announced today.
The team announced that its co-founder and CEO Mark Pincus will leave the company following the acquisition.
Mojang's official website also confirmed the previously reported $1.5 billion purchase price for Fortnite. It sometimes feels a bit strange, but I'm willing to bet that 112 million monthly players are more than FortNite currently has, and that the mobile title may be competing on that scale. One of the most played games in the world, with over 1 million players per month, according to the latest data from Electronic Entertainment Expo .
I expect Minecraft to live forever, will continue to be one of the most popular mobile games in the world for years to come and that the AR game Pokemon GO will be the next target. Available in print and online, read more about the game and its future in our full review available here and here.
With over 150 million copies sold, Minecraft continues to dominate the mobile games market, with more than 1.5 million downloads per day and a market share of over 40%.
Microsoft paid $2.5 billion for Minecraft back in 2014, and the game has grown enormously since then. Just months after the Xbox release, the first Minecraft LEGO set was released, and toys and branded items flooded the shelves. Microsoft wants to expand the universe of Minecraft with a new game and has already announced a sequel, but not even one.
The latter was an instant success, with over a million downloads in five days, an average of 17,000 copies sold per day since its May 2012 release, and more than 4 million sales.
Minecraft has long outgrown its status as an indie game, and the exclusivity clause with Microsoft has expired. The Java Pocket Edition has surpassed 10 million sales, while the Raspberry Pi Edition is focused on education. While the regular version of Minecraft lets players play with items that have been lost creatively after dying in modes like, Microsoft mixes traditional modes with new ways to play Minecraft. Versions for PS3, PS4 and PSVita have been announced, as well as a new version for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
While this is an adaptation, it's built on the existing bedroom engine so it will be very familiar to existing Minecraft players.
If radiation tracking isn't enough to get you excited, the latest update to Minecraft also brings a cane with new bugs in Minecraft, or more specifically, bees. In collaboration with the World Wildlife Foundation , Mojang has welcomed these little friends into the world of Minecraft. Minecraft mobs and creatures are also available, including a new pig that really loves mud.
Less than a month later, 1,000 copies had been sold and Minecraft boasted of selling over 400 million copies. When Persson scaled back the hours he spent in his job and devoted more time to Minecraft development under the banner of the Mojang Specifications, they gained over 20,000 registered players in just a few months.
The Nether in quick succession led to an explosion in sales and led to Persson expanding the number of brains working on Minecraft. The Mojang Specifications became Mojangs AB, which was founded as a group courted by Notch itself, a company that was still interested in producing its own game. This explosion of development saw a regular Friday update schedule added, and the creation of a new version of the game, Minecraft 2.0.
On January 12, 2011, one million Minecraft accounts were registered, and just six months later, 10 million accounts were registered. This resulted in a new version of the game Minecraft 2.0.1 with over 1.5 million new users and over 10,000 new accounts.
To bring Minecraft to the masses, a separate branch of the game entered development for the emerging smartphone market, Minecraft Pocket Edition, now encoded in C + +. First, it was unveiled on the PlayStation 4 and then brought Minecraft to Android, specifically Xperia Play, but it wasn't quickly out of step and lagged behind in terms of disclosing the main Minecraft. Not really making the leap to create a full-fledged mobile game for Android and other mobile platforms has been absolutely an obstacle on other platforms.
