The peninsula between Katendrecht and Rotterdam was an idyllic stopover - off the route between Amsterdam and Antwerp in the 19th century. ROTTERDAM - On February 10, 2020, a plane driven by a pole crashed from Sumatralaan Roterdam to Katenreacht and landed in several houses.
In the first half of the 20th century, the area was a vibrant centre of maritime nightlife. In the 1960s, when the port was moved to the west, it went into decline and in the 1970s it went into the 1980s.
In recent decades Katendrecht has had a reputation as the most neglected and run-down district in Rotterdam. His image was largely defined by prostitution, street fighting, drugs and harassment. The neighborhood has increasingly become a seedy neighborhood, where seedy neighborhoods heal stolen goods and where prostitution is practiced.
Since the mid-1980s, the neighborhood has been known as the Red Light District or Chinatown. In addition, the Rotterdam City Safety Index has shown that Katendrecht is one of the safest neighbourhoods in the city for two years in a row. The city is a breath of fresh country air that can be transported from one end of the city to the other in less than an hour. It is not surprising that Rottersdam has families starting their families there, and it has an image as one of the wealthiest and most prosperous countries in Europe.
The Maashaven Rijnhaven was dug at the end of the 19th century to create a peninsula that would soon be christened De Kaap. The community sought this beautiful piece of land to expand its port activities.

Over the last ten years, the peninsula on the south shore of Rotterdam's harbour, Katenthrescht, has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Netherlands and a popular destination for tourists. You have to knock some money off the city for restaurants, but the friends keep talking about it.
The district in question did not originally belong to Rotterdam, but existed for several centuries as a small, relatively prosperous settlement on the south shore of the harbour. In the early 19th century, however, it was merged with the nearby municipality of Charlois and incorporated into Rottersdam.
This union enabled the city to expand its port, and Katendrecht experienced a strong industrialization during this period. Two large port facilities were evacuated next to it, turning the district into a peninsula and demolishing most rural buildings to make way for warehouses, silos and shipyards. By the mid-20th century, thousands of Chinese immigrants had settled in Kat Endecht, so that it was colloquially known as "China Town" until the 1980s.
Chinese institutions, including the red CEC church Donarpad, were given the title for the more central districts of Rotterdam, although there are still a number of Chinese institutions in Katendrecht . Riva offers a good overview of the surrounding districts and the city centre. Hopefully you shared your experience with Kat endecht during your stay in Rottersdam as an expat.
