Taking advantage of the leadership opportunity within team development is one example of the skillset of a team leaderas role as team coach. Just like there are times you have to be the leader as a style of leadership, there are times you have to be a team coach, engaging your teams, and building the whole team culture. Team coaches leadership skills create a way of uncovering the dynamics within a team that are holding a team back from operating as the team at its best. Facilitating an important team dialogue is the focus for the teams leaders in their role as a team coach.
Perhaps all that team leaders should be doing is providing one-on-one feedback when there is deviant behavior, and sometimes hosting social events to get the team members to know one another as real human beings. For teams in which members of a team need to depend a little more heavily on each other, it is not enough just to maintain civility. Itas not about creating an environment where people are talking all the time.
One reason why is because--and Iam going to break down that myth as much as possible, in this, as little as possible, as I can, for this really, really brief time. Leaders do not waste their thoughts wondering what others are going to think about them. Most of the time that you spend worrying about others thoughts on you is making up thoughts in your own head anyway. The best place to put time or money is into your own mind, because once you master that, no one can ever take that away from you.
My step-dad, who owned his own trucking business in the oil and gas business, has always taught me that working hard at something that you believe in will reap far greater rewards, both financially, and, done well, provide a life that you can never want. My father, one of the most authentic individuals you can meet, was all about work security, he always encouraged me to simply have a job that was secure, had stable shifts, a paycheck, and benefits. This vastly different experience helped me to develop as a leader, and prepared me for the rest of my time in uniform, and beyond.
I was hospitalized, and just--a part of me was awakening to think that there had to be a better way. One trigger I had, I like, it is stupid, but whenever I would go up on an elevator, particularly if I was by myself, I would just do the sit up, which is stupid, but just it was just I felt -- you heard sitting is the new smoking.
Certain qualities of leadership come easier to some people than others. People are more readily inclined to cooperate with those who they perceive will produce the results that are promised.
Rewarding power exists when the manager has the ability to provide incentives for employees who do well. For example, offering an increase to employees who had the highest sales numbers indicates remuneration power. As a workplace leader, rewards power works best when the rewards are relevant to employees. While having information power may happen once, you may be someone known for having critical knowledge about an industry, product, or market.
This is a perfect storm for creating a perfect spy, as you already got the WWII Spy in Real Life. He had such a lot of faith, was so charismatic, was so intelligent, he just believed he would talk his way back in. A real-life spy from World War II knew that Johnny was stuck, so he said, Okay, I am going to help you, and that is how, basically, he was recruited into the Abwehr, as Johnnys German agent, and then he went straight over to the British and said, Hey, I just got recruited. A real-life World War II spy gets all of that money right as writer Ian Flemings coming back, and as Fleming is staying in Lisbon as he is coming back, he knows Popov has just got all this money, and it was $40k, which in modern times would have been something like $600k, cash.
In fact, in looking for a great name for Fleming, he saw James Bond as being the name of an author from one of his books, Birdwatchers. And yet, as we looked back, we instantly saw James Bond, with his martini shaken, not stirred -- his own time-honored idol -- and said, Hey -- maybe this is his fault. They are both clean-shaven, they are both sporty, they are both great with their hands, a real-life World War II spy speaks five languages, James Bond speaks three, James Bond is a great gunner, and Popoff had just won two gunfights.
The answers to those questions are going to give you effective strategies, but on their own, they do not instill the kind of commitment we desperately need right now.
