Details are slim on the ground regarding a GoldenEye 007 remastering project, though you can imagine any such project essentially remakes the game and brings it up to modern-day standards for graphics and gameplay. Yes, take it with a grain of salt at this point, but there is a potential GoldenEye Remaster out there -- it is just a matter of whether or not it will actually get released. You may recall hearing Rare had already made a GoldenEye remaster, way back during the Xbox 360 era, but was prevented from publishing it because of an issues surrounding rights. The game was initially published by Nintendo, but the Xbox 360 now has ownership of its developer and they would -- one assumes -- like to publish any remasters like this one on Microsofts Xbox console.
Xbox achievement tracker website TrueAchievements even listed the game as being available as early as January, and this is also not the first time that Xbox has tried to bring GoldenEye 007 onto their console. As for this remastering GoldenEye, the latest indicators that it is coming soon came from an Xbox Achievements listing that appeared on the internet. Yes, it is because Microsoft recently added that games achievements on their official site, leading many people on Twitter to suggest it would be getting remastered and released on Xbox. The games achievements have appeared recently on Microsofts servers, giving our best indication to date that the game is slated to be released for the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X/S.
With a complete list of achievements now appearing for the game, it looks like the game may actually make its way into our hands sometime within the next week or two. Getting the chance to remaster or remaster GoldenEye 007 would be a huge win for the Xbox One, and it is certainly another nice addition to Game Pass. That is, since GoldenEye 007 was initially released on Nintendo platforms, perhaps Xbox has cut a deal to get the game to Switch in some capacity. Some expected the GoldenEye remaster to show up at Xboxs showcase during the Summer Game Fest, but there was no luck.
According to earlier reports, the Xbox achievements for GoldenEye 007 were identical, with the game community inferring these had no connection with the cancelled remaster for Xbox 360, which was never released because of issues over challenging IP rights. Achievement images, as well as the miniature of Rares classic James Bond game, have also appeared on the internet, adding to speculation that the 1997 Nintendo 64 title may make its way onto the Xbox at some point in the future. Xbox chief Phil Spencer said that the absence of GoldenEye 007 on Xbox was an issue right, suggesting it was a business problem causing a delay, not some sort of problem with getting the game running on the new hardware. GoldenEye 007, which is widely considered to be one of the greatest games of all time, released for Nintendo 64 in 1997, may be getting remastered for Xbox, following years of requests from fans.
Numerous attempts to recapture the games magic were made over the years, including an Activision-published version of GoldenEye 007 which launched for the Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, and PS3 in 2010. The 60th anniversary of The James Bond Franchise is celebrated in 2022, leading many to speculate that classic N64 title GoldenEye 007 may eventually get re-released as part of the festivities. Speaking with VGC first in an interview with Microsoft about the N64 classic GoldenEye 007 last year, Can Remasteras co-directors said that he did not believe that a previously cancelled remaster on the Xbox 360 would ever officially come out. While it hasnat been officially confirmed yet, a new documentary focusing on GoldenEye is coming out later this month.
A New GoldenEye For A New BondThe GoldenEye story is back in action, with a revamped solo plot featuring Daniel Craig as Bond, and written by Bruce Feirstein, who was a writer on the original film. The upcoming James Bond title will feature a brand-new Bond, serving as an origin story for her majestys finest agent.
The game is inspired by James Bond film GoldenEye, tasks the player with controlling an agent through a single-player campaign in order to prevent a criminal from using a satellite-based weapon on the City of London. The book followed closely the plot of the 1995 James Bond film, but novelist John Gardner added a violent sequence before an opening parachute jump, where Bond killed a group of Russian security guards, a change which would remain and expand on in the GoldenEye 007 video game. Similarly, Danjaq LLC changed the initial category for their trademark application to downloadable electronic game software, also suggesting a re-imagining was underway, considering the original GoldenEye 07 was not downloadable when GoldenEye 007.
