When Eon/Danjaq got a giant cheque in the mail generated by sales from that one piece of merchandising, they decided that they had to look into seeing what the fuss was about with this game. EA sat down with Eon/Danjaq and told them that EA wanted to make another Bond game, but one more akin to an actual first-person shooter.
The entire idea of playing as an agent who is out to get you is similar to playing as James Bond. The game is an outlier to normal Bond games, as there is only Agent 007 in the game for 2 minutes in total, then it is over.
The gameplay for Agents of Swindle is the same as every other Bond game on the EA Bond games, with one additional challenging add-on...the Golden Eye controls. The game becomes really simple and enjoyable once you have figured out eye controls. Well, with GoldenEye, we went deeper into first-person shooting mechanics, we were very focused on ground-based action, where in many of the 007 movies, many James Bond games, however, James Bond is about land-based, sea-based, aerial action, so Bond is flying helicopters, flying jets.
For instance, you can run machines that pull guys off, feed guys to sharks, and on Moonraker levels, you can strand guys in meeting rooms, right down in a firing line with a rocket motor, like James Bond does. Or perhaps -- just maybe -- electronic arts can attempt to make it work as a 007 game that does not even feature 007 at all.
One thing that I noticed with later Bonds, especially Craig Bond, as opposed to the Connery/Moore Bonds is that the later Bonds tended to be outlaws or out-of-mission a much greater amount of times, for longer periods, than the earlier Bonds. The MI6 Agent gone Rogue story allows for gaming to explore a side of the Bond universe never addressed in film, and it suggests that the villains in the James Bond universe are not any more effective than they are, because all of them have their own ambitions and plans for the world; those plans do not involve collaboration, and the reason the villains still have not overtaken the government of the world is precisely because they are too busy fighting each other. Now, do not get me wrong, I like watching and playing as James Bond, so seeing your favourite man you play get killed off at the beginning of the game is quite disappointing, but like all Bond movies and games, Bond is actually not dead. The ability for gameplay diversity is perhaps the games franchises most unique strength, and taking away Rogue Agent from this makes it, by consequence, much less distinctive of a first-person shooter. In fact, the contextual-kill bonuses were also present in games going back to Agent Under Fire, in which you were challenged to uncover every opportunity Bond had to perform in any given stage.
