It feels as though Idris Elba has been rumored as the replacement to Daniel Craig as long as Craig himself has been on the rumored James Bond. As seen most recently in The Green Knight, Dev Patel may seem a weird choice for the next Bond, given that he is known for appearing in more critically-acclaimed independent films rather than blockbuster actioners, but -- though hard to recall now -- he was also in the running to replace Daniel Craig back when Daniel Craig was first cast. Daniel Craig was only six years younger when Craig took over as the next James Bond back in 2006, and we have a feeling Cubby Broccoli would eventually want to put a younger Bond onscreen, if only to distinguish the next installment from those directly preceding him.
Producer Barbara Broccoli told The Press Association that the new 007 is a mans character, whereas Daniel Craig has said James Bond does not have to be played by a woman -- as he needs strong female roles that are set far away from the long shadow cast by an iconic male character. There is no doubt about the actors abilities: maybe Bond can be the part that was born for him. It is no surprise, then, that the picture has settled on Cillian Murphy as the new 007: He has got the action chops, the looks, the style, the bravado, and pretty much everything else associated with the part.
Plus, Richard Madden is Scottish, and we have not had a Scottish Bond since the original, Sean Connery. If cast, Jamie Dornan would be the first Northern Irish Bond, which would be an interesting first.
