Screenwriter and director Damien Chazelle asked his roommate Justin Hurwitz, who set La La Land to music, to write the tunes for six original songs. The tune "City of Stars" first appeared in the movie, when Ryan Gosling as Sebastian sings an abbreviated version of "Piers" in the movie as a duet with Emma Stone as Mia, before the two moved on. The song became a kind of anthem for the film and was one of two tunes nominated for best original song.
The music and songs were composed by Justin Hurwitz, with lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The music won the Oscar for best film score along with Hurwitz's "Moments.".
In the duet, jazz pianist Sebastian and the aspiring actress Mia construct a musical number that appears in La La Land and serves to establish a connection between the characters of the film. In the film, the song is sung by Gosle's character Sebastian as he sings and dances on the pier of Hermosa Beach.
La La Land was released in 2016 and is one of the most famous music films of recent times. In December, Pasek and Paul received the Harold Adamson Lyric Award from ASCAP Foundation Awards in New York City. The critically acclaimed film has been nominated for 14 Oscars over the years and took home the original song, with "City of Stars" just moments away from winning for the original score. City of Stars and La La Land won the Oscar for best original song.
Following the success of Chazelle's Whiplash at Sundance in 2014, the duo Chazelle and Hurwitz began serious working on City of Stars, with Hurwitz composing the melodies for the film. The duo also created the music and lyrics for the hit Broadway show Dear Evan Hansen. Her previous on-screen work includes music for Smashing, Sesame Street and Johnny and the Sprite.
City of Stars was originally meant to be a solo song for Emma Stone's character, but it became a duet with her Gosling character, replacing a cut song called "La La Land," which they had originally planned for her character. We gave it to Sebastian and saved the song "Audition" as a big moment for Mia because we thought it would make him more powerful. We wanted the number to appear at a crossroads, at the moment when Mia commits to play with Sebastian and commit to a new band.
