Early masters of the Chan tradition were referred to as "Laṅkāvatāra masters".
It is held that it is primarily through Dharma practice and meditation that others may attain enlightenment and become Buddhas as well.
The enlightenment sought in Chan had to stand up well to the demands and potential frustrations of everyday life.

Recent research shows that the early phase of Chan did not proceed as smoothly as later authors would make us believe rather, it appears as a period marked by numerous controversies of doctrinal and personal nature.Master Yunmen is the last Chan teacher of this classical period who rose to great fame.Toward the end of the Song dynasty it was gradually absorbed into the Linji tradition, as were all the other Chan lines with the exception of Caodong Jap.Eldenjing. In 1960 Zhang Caiwei reentered monastic life under Master Dongchu at the Buddhist Culture Center in Peitou, Taipei, taking the Dharma name Sheng Yen.Rinzai tradition of Chan, becoming the second generation descendant of Chan Master Xuyun, the greatest contemporary patriarch and reviver of Chan Buddhism.In 2006 Master Sheng Yen created a new Chan lineage, the Dharma Drum Lineage, which unites his transmissions from the Caodong and Linji lines.The lineages were based on this approach to teaching. The teachings are very similar but they come with different setings for each individual person
