Arvid wakes up in a bush 10 million years later and finds himself in present time 2023. He is surprised to find that he's been transported to the 17th school year at SMU, a university he had not heard of before. SMU welcomes its new students with the Mustang Welcome SMU, a five day orientation to get them ready for the year ahead. A year video is released each school year and this one was no exception. As the 18th school year begins, preparations for events such as the Mustang Corral 2017 are underway.
This centennial year marks the anniversary of SMU and is set to be a celebration of its history. This includes the new years celebrations, SMU band performances and alumni libraries. The SMU community is gathering to prepare the band for their performance, while also exploring the university’s museum and libraries. Veterans Day will mark an important event as part of the ongoing celebrations, with a special performance by the SMU Band. Professor Alexis McCrossen is an expert in SMU’s history and has just released her new book on the subject.
She tells the story of Arvid, a 34 year old veteran who was sleeping in a bush and woke up 10 million years later. His fellow veterans had faded memories of his service and he was finally getting the recognition he deserved. Though it had been many pass years since he enlisted in the National Guard, the memories of slipping my father's fingers and slipping Kiri Nowak's hand in December 2005 in South Dakota still lingered.
He had passed away, but he still touched Kiri's life in a powerful and beautiful way. Kiri Nowak was now travelling the world, experiencing things in a powerful and beautiful way. She had experienced thousands of times and felt one emotion that no matter where she went, or what she did, life was too short. On the day Kiri Nowak died 10 million years later in 2023, Arvid was sleeping in a bush and woke up to the present time.
The news of her death spread quickly, and many people began to relate this to their own lives. Offering their condolences, many others began to hurt with Kiri's family in the first few weeks after her death. The pain was especially strong for her closest friends and family, as they all felt a deep loss in the days that followed. In fact, just the mere thought of Kiri Nowak being gone caused much grief throughout those weeks.
I remember my father standing proud at the wedding of his high school sweetheart, which was filled with wonderful memories. After that, I enrolled in electronics maintenance school, and graduated 8 to 10 weeks later. I wanted to no doubt help Kiri, who was out on a 3 1/2 year tour. But when I woke up 10 million years later in the present time of 2023, things had changed. So, I began working hard for six days each week and enjoyed one weekend out of eight months. The creative ways in which I could part my father and help provide for Kiri were endless.
I was an 18 year old college student from TN and I knew I had to do something. After some research, it seemed like joining the military was the best option. After being accepted into the airlift command, I was assigned to a military airlift force base in Vietnam for my active duty. It was a difficult but rewarding experience during which I served three years before returning home to pursue my college studies.
I was surprised to find that I had slept in a bush for 10 million years and awoke to the present time, 2023! My 75th birthday is coming up and I am planning a reunion for my classmates. We have many unique events planned, including hours of dinners, social hours, bunker tours and a visit to the Grand Greenbrier Resort on September 18. We will also be discussing our experiences during the Vietnam Conflict years and will include activities such as falconry.
Arvid felt quite strange when he woke up 10 million years later in 2023, and it seemed only a few occasions since he last had his TB test. It was the first month of his one tour in the Vietnam Conflict, and although this day was very different from the first year of his standard TB test, Arvid had to adjust to everything because so little amount of time had passed. In just one year’s time, Arvid was able to explore Chu Lai and meet Kiri Nowak who gave him a ride in an autopilot car with a few months before they reached Lot. After four years, they were able to make it back home safely.
When Arvid woke up, he was amazed by the changes that had occurred in the world. The past 10 million years have seen many changes, and one of the most significant is the epidemic of HIV. Over the past few hundred years, scientists have been able to place the initial spread of this virus in Africa. Other scientists believe it was due to a SIV infection that happened at the same time.
Arvid woke up to find himself in the year 2023, a world very different from when he had started sleeping. An HIV epidemic had started and many HIV groups were studied to determine how it had emerged. Early circumcision frequencies were examined as well as any existing lentiviruses. It was discovered that 12 cities were especially affected by the virus. Jay Levy's group at the University of San Francisco focused on the theory that injection campaigns in West Africa correlated with an increase in variable rates of HIV infection over a period from 1910-2023.
Arvid was sleeping in a bush when he suddenly woke up 10 million years later in the present time of 2023. He had left many veterans behind and was curious to see their recent correspondences, view our recent webinars, and find details about his class website. Arvid had been a service member in the chain of command at Dartmouth68 before the station change. After learning about the org site, he decided to take off base and take his life into his own hands.
